History Curriculum

History Vision Statement

At Ash Hill we believe our History curriculum is essential to achieving our vision and instilling our values for the pupils we teach. History is a brilliant way to grow minds for learning because we nurture questioning, study engaging topics that link to pupils' lives and to spark the children's curiosity. We aim to provide hands on, practical experiences to support learning including visits to museums with historical relevance.

The skills pupils develop through the History curriculum allow us to realise our mission of crafting skills for life - the children learn skills that will serve them well throughout their lives; they consider the validity and reliability of historical sources and learn how to debate and discuss important issues. They develop an understanding of key concepts that help them to understand the world around them, such as industry and empire.

We nurture our values throughout the History curriculum. For example, the learning journey is designed to develop a good understanding of the community in which our pupils live, thus developing community mindedness. From Roman villa remains on the Rye, to the history of chairs and industry, the children explore what makes High Wycombe special and how the town we know today has evolved over time. We look at the resilience and determination of significant people in history. We encourage pupils to develop responsibility through exploring how humans have shaped the world around them, linking with our Geography curriculum. Our learners develop consideration of others through the study of past struggles, such as The Great Fire of London.
