Design and Technology

Design and Technology Vision Statement

Our Design and Technology Curriculum is shaped by our school vision, which aims to enable all children, regardless of background, ability or additional needs, to flourish and achieve their very best. At Ash Hill Primary School we aim to support pupils to develop their creativity through designing and making. The children are taught to combine their creative skills with increasing knowledge and understanding to design and make a range of products. Skills and knowledge are progressive to ensure that all children build on their existing skills and knowledge and have opportunities to practise and apply what they learn.  

Evaluation is an integral part of the design process and allows children to adapt and improve their product. Design and Technology allows children to apply the knowledge and skills learned in other subjects across the curriculum, particularly Maths, Science and Art. Children's interests are captured through project design briefs, giving them purpose, motivation and meaning for their learning. Practical, hands-on experiences are important to us at Ash Hill and this is a high priority within Design and Technology. 

All teaching of Design and Technology follows the design, make, evaluate cycle. Each stage is rooted in technical knowledge. Relevant contexts give meaning to learning and provide a purpose for the project. While making, children are given the choice of a range of tools to select from. During the process children will articulate the strengths and weaknesses of their designs, making changes where required with determination and resilience. When evaluating, children are encouraged to critique their own products against a set of design criteria. We want children to find joy in their achievements as well in the creative design, making and evaluating processes.
